Struggling to get his writing career off the ground, Gus Barton finds an ally in an unlikely place.

By day, Gus Barton delivers packages for PDQ, but at night he turns into August Barton, thriller writer. When his first novel is published by a small publishing company, Gus dreams of acceptance into the Thriller Writers Association, but sales are slow and Gus discovers the challenges of getting noticed.

To generate interest, he gives away a few copies of his book through an online contest. Soon after, a negative review appears online, and Gus's hopes for a best seller are dashed.

Written by an influential reviewer, the review confirms Gus’s worst fear he’s a failure. His wife, Sally, shows little interest in his latest venture, and the members of his critique group are as inexperienced as he is. They encourage each other's efforts and offer superficial comments and suggestions, but none of them are writing thrillers, and they are focused on their own projects. Gus needs help if he's going to succeed as a novelist.

Desperate to improve his writing--and his life--he befriends a lonely recluse who agrees to give him feedback on his work in progress.

What emerges will transform both men's lives.

"A well-written tale with a good character who undergoes a nice transformation from avenging writer to a more self-aware, caring author." --RR Brooks, Author of Justi the Gifted

The Review A Novelette edition by Jilaine Tarisa Literature Fiction eBooks

It took me a little bit to get into, as I was on vacation with family, but once I really got into it, I couldn't set it down!! The plot was woven such that it was intriguing and the ending surprised me in a deep and wonderful way. It was such a great book, and so many feelings and facts were put into such a short writing space. Her character development and plot twists and turns keep you reading this moving story. I've read other work by Jilaine Tarisa, and I really enjoy her extraordinary ability with the written word. I look forward to reading her next book! (which I just purchased in Kindle format!)

The Review A Novelette edition by Jilaine Tarisa Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

"The Review" contained excellent character development. It was an interesting storyline with a believable hero and moral. The author balances descriptions with just enough narrative and action to keep the reader interested. This story kept the reader waiting for a revenge of sorts which ended up having a very uplifting turn.
I really enjoyed this book. The story moved quickly, I liked the characters and did not feel like I had met them all before in other books. I honestly did not know what direction this story was going to take and that is a big reason why it was fun to read. It was interesting to learn about the challenges that go along with being a writer that those of us who don't write would not know about. I highly recommend this book - it will not take you long to read and it is a great story.
This book is a pleasure to read. For one, it's short - about 44 pages in total, which is perfect for the format. I very admire Jilaine Tarisa's prose, having read her first book, A Moment of Time. She's an intelligent writer. The Review is pure fun, and as a writer myself, I think her premise is very clever Aspiring thriller writer Gus gets a first review that derails his book's chance of success. Haven't we all been there or are afraid we will find ourselves in that position? I found myself chuckling on several occasions. Gus works for PDQ delivery service, which I took to mean Pretty Damn Quick, but no, apparently it's Packages Delivered Quickly. The plot twists are clever and I enjoyed the slightly L.A. gumshoe / film noir quality that works because of Gus's career and revenge aspirations. Enough said. Read it. You'll like it. Think about writing your own review. Surely the author won't take Gus-style revenge.
Not at all what I expected! Every time I thought I had it figured out, I was proven wrong. I can't even classify it -- is it a suspense? A thriller? A friendship movie? Human interest? Yes! Just enough plot twists (not unreasonable or unrealistic ones either). To say anymore would just be spoiling it. A very quick read too.
Excellent story. I don't want to give away anything but the ending was very moving. I nearly cried!
Another interesting read from Jilane. Check out all of her books on . You will be glad that you did.
I rarely read novels or fiction, but this one is a really good one. The writing style and grammar are excellent, high quality. The technical writing I'm more familiar with has a different goal than reading for pleasure. This novelette has a message. It is the ending that is surprising and wonderful. It portrays a philosophical message of altruism and love that honestly moved me to tears. Read this to the end and you won't be disappointed. It is a happy ending and I am very pleased.
